The profile of India has undergone considerable change after the opening up of the Indian economy in 1991. The economic outlook of the country and the current business environment characterized by globalization, deregulation, competitive environment and emerging trends in information technology have opened new vistas of governance and enhanced the role of private initiative in the spheres of economic and social change.


The Group of Economic & Social Studies (GESS) was launched in February, 2002 under this backdrop, to act as a think-tank and conduct research and in-depth studies on various socio-economic and related issues. The studies of the Group will be of help to policy makers in government, public and private sector as well as international agencies.

Members of the Group have long-standing experience in different fields - economic, social, administrative and education. They have been associated with formulation and implementation of policies to bring about economic and social change at the national and international level.
